History of Montessori Education

Maria Montessori discovered the Montessori way of education. She felt that each child has a unique potential that needs to be revealed. The Montessori approach is based on the child's natural learning tendancy. The classrooms are in age groups of three. For example 0-3year olds could be in one learning enviornment, and 3-6 year olds in another. Maria Montessori felt that the younger children will learn from the older children and the older children will benifit from helping out the younger children.

The activities within the classroom are for the individual child to choose. Each child in the room can be doing their own lesson with the guidnace from a trained teacher. They also work at their own pace. The montessori philosophy teaches children by using the 5 senses.

The materials that the children are using are on low shelves so that they have easy access to take it off the shelf and put it back when they are finihsed. The work is colorful and inviting to attract the children to use that piece of work. The peieces of work found in a Montessori classroom are self-correcting, in that the children can figure out the correct way to use that piece of equiptment without any instruction.
